Jeremiah 10:1-16

Reflect
Idols are something that we often talk about in church, but this looks so different in today’s culture compared to when Jeremiah was written. Back then, they had literal statues and monuments made from trees or gold and silver that they worshipped and carried around with them. Today, our idols seem less sinister or in your face. It’s less obvious to us and it’s harder to see the things that we idolize as being in direct opposition to God. But the principle is the same, we’re just a little more oblivious.
When we take time to think about it, it’s easy to see the things that we idolize: money, celebrity, success, reputation, the latest tech, the most number of likes, or whatever else. The biggest delusion we face is that we think we can strive after these things, while also prioritizing a relationship with God. Jeremiah’s words to the people of Judah could just as easily be said to us. Verses 15-16: “They are worthless, the objects of mockery… He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things… the Lord Almighty is his name.”

Apply
How are the things that you idolize separating you from God today?
