Psalm 102

Reflect

When you start reading this psalm, it comes across as pretty gloomy and depressing. It doesn’t sound like there is a whole lot of hope for the situation. You get the sense that this writer is really hurting. And just when you think all is lost, there are two words that change the entire feel of this passage: “But you”. We get this profound description of pain and suffering, but the writer turns to God and writes, “but you”.

“Everything is going wrong, but you…”

“I don’t understand, but you…”

“I feel hopeless, but you…”

In the midst of his pain and suffering, the writer turns to what he knows about the character of God. He turns to God’s promises, His faithfulness, and His mercy. He trusts that he hasn’t been forgotten, and isn’t left alone to deal with everything coming his way.

There is encouragement here for everyone. If you’re going through the valley, know that you can go to God with your grieving. If you’re not, you can walk with those who are towards the God who hears our cries.
