Ephesians 5:15-21

Reflect

A few years ago, our family was heading out of town on a trip by car. In order to make it to our destination on time, we started very early in the morning. As it was early, there wasn’t a lot of traffic. As we left the city, we began to encounter some light fog, just a patch here or there. The further out of the city we got, the worse the fog became, to the point where at certain spots it was hard to see any of the road surface, let alone the road markings. As the driver, I had some decisions to make. Maintain the legal speed that I am allowed to travel at? Slow down? Stop? By the posted signage I could travel at 110 kilometers per hour. But for sure, that would have been a very unwise thing to do. I slowed down considerably, and we were able to slowly make our way through the fog.

Paul exhorts his listeners to walk or live wisely, making the most of the opportunities that present themselves to us. He calls us to discern the will of God and act according to it, not to the things we may see the world calling us to. As you go through this week, are you careening wildly through the unknown? Or are you proceeding carefully toward the destination before you.
