Colossians 2:1-5

Reflect

The church that Paul is writing to was in an immensely popular and "current" city. Colossae was a happening city. As it was directly on a major trade route, it had a very diverse assortment of ethnicities as well as cultures existing within it. Coming with that context would be various perspectives on how to find meaning, truth and ultimate reality.

Sound familiar? As similar as Colossae is to Edmonton, we are currently living in unprecedented times. The range found in our city could not be imagined by the Colossians.

Wisely, Paul's concern is not so much that his readers would be persuaded by ridiculous arguments, rather that they would not be persuaded by "plausible arguments" coming from people that do not hold onto the central ideas of Christianity.

We do well to realize this also. There are very persuasive smart people that are deluded and, with very good intentions, are misguiding us. We must resist the urge to fearfully circle the wagons and only exist with others that think and live like us. Some of us are motivated to live this way as we don’t want to risk being infected by the "world". Paul doesn’t live this way; rather, he lovingly runs into that context with the courage, grace, and love of Jesus Christ.

What motivates you to abandon your comfort zones, reject fear, and share the wonderful mysteries of Jesus with those that are deluded with plausible arguments?
