Devotional Guide for Wednesday, November 29

Colossians 3:18-4:1

Reflect

A short while ago I wrote a devotional on the sister passage to this one which is found in Ephesians 5. Together these passages have become known as the “haustafeln”, the house code. Home is an intense spiritual warzone.

Crucial to our understanding is that Paul was writing into a culture guided by Aristotle’s rules, which included complete dominance by the man. This is directly opposed to Galatians 3:18, which says that there are no longer inequalities. Paul is out on a limb with what he writes. He is opposing the cultural order with a new order that comes from the Lord (count how many times the Lord is mentioned in today’s passage). Paul emphatically declares that the man is not the head of the home, neither is the woman, the child, nor the servant. Paul pleads for the readers of this letter to acknowledge that the Lord is the head of the home. Any home that does not have the husband and wife desire to have the Lord lead the home will be detrimentally hindered from attaining the fullness of life as chosen by Jesus.

What impact does the way that your parents modelled leadership have upon you?

What is an indication of who is leading your current home?

What would need to happen for your home to be living in the fullness that Jesus’s Lordship delivers?
As always, I love hearing how you are advancing.
