Devotional Guide for Monday, December 25

Matthew 22:35-40

Reflect

Merry Christmas! Today we celebrate to wonder of the great love that God has for humanity. God, in His love chose to enter our world as one of us. Philippians 2:7 reminds us that Jesus emptied Himself of His position and the privilege of being at the right hand of the Father, but all the while is still fully God. This is a difficult concept to grasp, and yet all of this is done because of the great love of God for us, His creation.

In our passage today Jesus elevates the greatest command to be that of love. First, is love for God. Romans 5:8-9 reminds us that the aim of the birth of Christ that we celebrate today, the trajectory of the life of Christ is the cross and the empty tomb. While we were yet sinners Christ died for us. So, in obeying the command to love God, we are not initiating love, we are reciprocating a love like none other in the world. And the second greatest command comes ever so slightly behind this call to love God. It is that we are to love our neighbours as we love ourselves. The wonder of love has come to earth! Celebrate His great love for us!
