Luke 8: 43-48

Today we will be continuing our series “Dwelling in Jesus” and the sub-series, which has us transforming through the careful questions that Jesus asks.

Today’s story is a story within a story, which is actually part of an even bigger story. To really grasp what is happening, please read at least the full chapter 8. Consider the women in the stories. Who are they? What role do they have in the Jesus movement?

Although our passage focuses specifically on one of Jesus’s questions, pay attention to the other questions in the chapter and their context. Luke was very intentionally building the “wow” factor and how it relates to faith.

We don’t know much about the woman in our passage; though we must acknowledge that she is very desperate. She is lonely, socially outcast, broke and without hope (nothing is more desperate than that). Not a preferred position for anyone, least of all a woman in a male dominated culture.

Jesus, always very intentional and seemingly welcoming interruptions, consistently positions Himself to where the suffering people are, in order to provide relief to people living in pain.

Why do you feel desperate people came to Jesus? Who do you know that is desperate?
Beyond the physical healing, how else did Jesus heal this woman?
How are you following the Jesus Way in word and in deed, all motivated by love?
