Devotional Guide for Friday, February 23

Matthew 13:53-58

Reflect

Can you imagine being rejected in your hometown? Imagine you were a person known by your community. You have a deep understanding of some of the issues in the town, you’ve contributed to making the community a better place, you’ve helped those in need through volunteering, and you’ve guided the community toward a better and brighter future. As you attend the town hall and share your views, the community members respond with skepticism instead of embracing.

What an awful feeling! Jesus decided to visit his hometown, a village of approximately 1500 people, only to face being rejected by people that were supposedly close to Him (v55).

Jesus taught and performed miracles which the locals had no explanation for, and yet they would not consider the truth about Jesus. Familiarity does breed contempt.

Apply

As you look at the timeline of your faith, whether you grew up in the church or not, how has your relationship with God changed over the years?
Has familiarity brought you further away from Jesus or closer?
Spending more time with Jesus helps deepen our relationship with Him not just through His humanity, but also divinity. Slow the rhythm of the day by pausing to read and pray at least 3 times today.
