Devotional Guide for Wednesday, March 20

Matthew 20:29-34

Reflect

This semester, the sermon series is working through questions that Jesus asked. Today’s passage includes a real gem of a question.

The blind men are asking Jesus to have mercy upon them. Jesus responds by asking, “What do you want Me to do for you?”. In other words, “What does Me giving you mercy look like for you?” Do the blind men grasp what Jesus’s mercy could do for their life? Jesus, the One that spoke creation into being, called Lazarus from the dead, and countless of other miracles. This Jesus awaits their answer. Pause that thought. If the blind men are given sight, there is an expectation that they would do something different. They would then see the suffering of others and come and care for them as they have been cared for. Their whole life may become more complicated because of this healing.

They answer, Jesus touches them, they are healed, and they follow Him. The next scene is the Triumphal Entry. The men that were healed likely waved their palm branches as recipients of mercy, seeing life in a new manner.

Ever wonder how long their jubilant appreciation lasted? Jesus cared for them, empowering them to care for others.

How have you received the care of Jesus? What rhythms do you include in your life that guide you to express the compassion and care of Jesus to those that Jesus allows you to see?
