Matthew 21:7-11

Reflect

A triumphal entry was similar to what we would call a victory parade. Usually, a king or general would enter a city either conquered by him or one that belonged to him. There would be some sort of chariot or war horse, people praising him, and possibly some sort of temple sacrifice.

A person's choice of transportation can reveal a lot about them. If someone drives a minivan with cheerios found in the crevasse of the seat, chances are that they might be a family person. If someone rides a bicycle as their only means of transportation, they might be either a student or environmentally conscious. Jesus’ triumphal entry was on a donkey. What does this reveal about Him?

This was the fulfillment of a prophecy found in Zechariah 9 about someone riding on a donkey to bring deliverance. The crowds would have recognized this fulfillment, seeing the promised hero destined to defend and liberate Israel! It makes you wonder how the same crowd that knew of the fulfilled prophecy would soon call for blood. They didn't understand His mission.

Apply

Consider the crowd's initial response of praise and their later call for blood. What does this reveal about the complexity of understanding Jesus' mission?
What does this say about divine plans and human expectations?
