Devotional Guide for Tuesday, April 30

1 Timothy 4:6-16

Reflect

Such a rich passage of Scripture that can be summed up by verse 16: “Watch your life (or character) and doctrine (or teaching) closely. Persevere in them…” Paul is calling Timothy to live an authentic life where his values match his actions, and his beliefs (based on sound doctrine) match his teaching. The ancient adage “Do as I say, not as I do” comes to mind, but it has no place in the Spirit-led believer’s life.

In prayer, ask Holy Spirit to search your heart (Psalm 139:23-24) and highlight any area of your character or doctrine/beliefs that needs to come into alignment with the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Where are you saying one thing, but doing another? For example, do we speak of the love of God for his children, but harshly judge others or ourselves? Do we say we trust the Lord, but behave as though our troubles are too much for Him to handle?

In the discipleship program Freedom Session, participants learn how to have an authentic relationship with God, with themselves, and with others. This includes creating a Life Plan to establish priorities, develop integrity and set values. It is one of the best programs I have seen that provides training in godliness (v7). This may be a program you want to consider taking with us in the Fall of 2024.
