Devotional Guide for Wednesday, May 1

1 Timothy 5:1-16

Reflect

“Treat yourself.” “You deserve it!” These and countless similar phrases are the mantra of many in our culture that is tempted with entitlement.

I once asked, “When does ‘self-care’ become self-indulgence?” Let me know how you would reply.

Today’s passage speaks clearly of the evil temptation and participation of a self-indulgent life. In other passages Paul writes extensively about the redeeming work of Jesus upon our inner life which brings us to abundant life. Here he writes boldly about how a follower of Jesus is recognized by their dedication to be living for the betterment of others. In contrast, he identifies that “she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives”’ (v6).

When our self-care drifts into the lane of self-indulgence, we place our own happiness and contentment into the role of God. Yes, self-care does mean taking care of our spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental needs; however, it is engaged in so that we are better equipped to love and serve others. Reject the temptation to only begin serving others when you have your whole life together. Serving others will speed up maturity.

How is your craving for Jesus aligning with your self-care? How are you resisting the urge to be too easily satisfied? How does your life reveal you are ultimately pursuing that which only Jesus can satisfy?
