Devotional Guide for Friday, May 3

1 Timothy 6:1-11

Reflect

“If I only had more...” is something that we say whether we realize it or not: more time, energy, strength, friendships, love, joy, patience, etc. Desiring more is often a slippery slope that can lead to spiritual disaster. As we look at Paul’s writing to Timothy, we’ll notice that the desire and love to be rich will only lead to ruin.

Paul is not saying that we cannot have material possessions or money, but when it becomes all-consuming and when we begin to love money to solve all our problems, it becomes spiritually dangerous (v10). Our relation to money needs to be seen with the proper perspective in relation to Jesus Christ (v7). It simply pales in comparison to the person of Jesus Christ as our supreme treasure and falls short of all that we will receive when we are with Him forever.

There is a temporary allure to what we can accumulate and what we can consume, but in the end, we’re only chasing after the wind. In order to have deep, long-lasting satisfaction, we need something much bigger than a love for money – we need a love for God.
