Devotional Guide for Friday, December 9

Luke 1:1-25

Reflect

Today we read about one of the stories that precludes Jesus’ birth: the foretelling of His cousin, John the Baptist’s birth. The story is an interesting one. We are first introduced to Zechariah, a diligent priest who loves the Lord. He and his wife are well beyond the age of childbearing, but it is assumed (when Gabriel says “your prayers have been answered”) that they still want to have children. When Zechariah meets the angel and is promised that his wife will give birth to John, his first instinct is doubt, and because of this, Zechariah is left mute for many months. I wonder, when we are seeking the Lord diligently in prayer for something and it looks like an answer is on the way, do we doubt? When we hear of God’s promises and hold onto His faithfulness, are we like Zechariah who tries to explain away the supernatural or are we like Mary who says “do to me as you please”? I want to encourage you this Christmas season to keep on diligently seeking the Lord to move in a supernatural way. Ask Him to move in a way that is impossible without His intervention. Then, when the answer(s) comes, celebrate by faith.
