Mark 3:31-35

Reflect

The Gospel of Mark moves swiftly. Though only 3 chapters in, already Jesus has demonstrated His unique position. In yesterday’s reading, we saw that this was causing His family to respond with a plan to stop the demise of their reputation. Certainly, they would have been a humble family, one that kept its head low and resisted drawing attention to themselves. Life is safer that way. However, there is a passion within Jesus that simply will not be contained. The result is demons being cast out and radical teaching on the only unforgiveable sin. With the hand of God clearly upon Him, Jesus is bonded with others who are not satisfied with pretenses, but hunger for fulfilling the calling of God on their life. Certainly other passages reveal that Jesus loved His family, yet clearly here Jesus boldly emphasizes that true family is not limited to our biological background. As you consider your spiritual sisters and brothers, how are you aiding those who are struggling? As you consider those in desperate conditions, what is a cause that you can get behind to relieve the strain our sisters and brothers are experiencing?
