John 14:15-31

Reflect

I am not a crier. There have been very few times in my life that I have cried. One of those times was in a movie theatre watching “Godspell” when I was a teenager. I had a complete meltdown as I watched Jesus saying goodbye to his friends. I felt the deep pain of the coming separation.

This passage is considered Jesus’ “farewell discourse”. Jesus sensed the anxiety, confusion and loss that the disciples were feeling and He comforted them by telling them that the Holy Spirit would do for them what He did, but from within. They would not be orphaned. The Holy Spirit would be permanently ministering to them, teaching and reminding them, guiding them into truth, bringing peace. This peace would not just be the absence of conflict, but a peace that comes from the blessing of His presence. They would have His peace in the face of suffering and trials, for it was grounded in God’s sovereignty.

Have you ever wished you had walked and talked with Jesus along with the disciples? You can experience that through the Holy Spirit. You can receive His love, comfort, guidance and peace. “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” (John 14: 27)
