John 15:1-8

Reflect

Depending upon several factors, it does take some time for us to see the effect of a cluster of grapes being separated from the branches of its vine. For many, the only grapes we’ve seen have come from a market. However, at some point most everyone can tell what is ‘good fruit’, and would think that the ‘good fruit’ came from a good branch, and by extension, from a good vine. When we shift from the physical to the spiritual, knowing what is good fruit becomes somewhat challenging. Throughout our culture we have highly functioning people who are greatly influencing others, perhaps even us. Are they bearing good fruit that is attached to a good branch, and therefore to a good vine? I remember my mom had a plastic grape cluster on a table.   It served a lot of purposes, but just didn’t measure up to a worthy scale when it mattered. What measuring scale do you use when it comes to ‘good fruit’? How did you use that scale when you followed a career path, decided what neighbourhood to live in, or determined who to partner with? What is an indication that you are discerning as you look at not just the fruit, but to the branch, and ultimately the vine?
