Devotional Guide for Friday, December 15

Luke 1:67-80

Reflect

Today’s passage is one of the final prophecies about the arrival and life of Jesus before He is born. Zechariah’s son John the Baptist has just been born and Zechariah’s mouth has been opened after being made mute by God because he did not believe what God was going to do. This prophecy is an incredible reminder of how the arrival and life of Jesus is something that God had been planning all along. In this prophecy, Zechariah mentions the covenant that God made with Abraham in Genesis 12, that his descendants would outnumber the stars and all  the nations of the earth would be blessed through him. Jesus’ arrival was a fulfilment (and continuation/deepening) of that promise! Through Jesus and His church, all of the nations have been, are, and will be blessed. His arrival marked the breaking in of the Kingdom of God on the earth in a special way. His Kingdom is a blessing to the earth. In a very real way, we are all recipients of the promise God made to Abraham, fulfilled through Jesus’ arrival, and is fulfilling through us (Jesus’ church). How can you be a blessing to others this Christmas season?
