Luke 11:1-13

Reflect

Even a brief glance at this passage reveals that prayer is central to walking with Jesus. The soul craftsman, Jesus, is praying (v.1) when His disciples come and ask Him to teach them (we love to learn from the experts) how to pray. Arguably, what becomes the most quoted prayer in history (close second is likely, ‘God help me!!’) is given by the Master. Then woven throughout this passage are subtle lessons on prayer. These must be embraced if we desire to be like Jesus, rather than settling for just doing what Jesus would do. Jesus closes the teaching with His bold proclamation that prevailing prayer for the Holy Spirit is of utmost importance (v.13). Prevailing, not frivolous prayer. The Father is so immensely patient with us, as we ask for so many fleeting items and neglect that which is most crucial to our becoming like Jesus. Pause and answer this carefully, “Do you really want to be like Jesus?” His adventure was not soft and comfortable, but it was worthy and lasting, and at the core of Jesus was the radiance of the Holy Spirit. Prevailing prayer is the pathway to the outpouring of the Spirit.  Pray above all else that you would be filled with the Holy Spirit.
