Luke 12:13-21

Reflect

When we began our trek through Luke, I asked you to keep in mind the question, “What shall we do?” That question weaves together this gospel. Jesus is the Saviour of our soul. However, that begins long before we die. His teaching on how to really live is unsurpassed. Honestly now, would not the man in the parable be heralded a success in today’s culture? He achieved what most others would love to be able to accomplish. Not Jesus, though. Have you ever come across a pile of acorns that the neighbourhood squirrel has collected? We see them as just acorns. That is how Jesus sees the man’s riches. If the money was to be used to alleviate suffering, to enrich the life of another, or achieve some other social benefit, something that ultimately glorifies the Lord, that would be notable. But to collect just for the sake of pride, truly that is foolish and receives no respect from Jesus, nor should it from us. There was a day when ‘storing in bigger barns’ was considered immoral and ungodly. Do you think that has changed? How are you aligning your values (money, time, etc.) to the teaching of Jesus? What is Jesus inviting you to do?
