Luke 23:44-49

Reflect

It was as if the whole earth was in mourning when darkness fell on the land for three hours, realizing the impact of the death of Jesus.

Jesus breathed His last and cried out with a shout, “Father into Your hands I commit My Spirit.”

The thick curtain in the temple was torn apart.  This was a barrier between God and man.  This is where the Ark of the Covenant was placed as described in Exodus 26:33-34. God spoke to the High Priest when he entered here.  This is where the High Priest would enter only once a year to atone and make amends for the wrong doing of God’s children and to reconcile between God and man.  This barrier was split in two.

Now we have immediate access to God in time of need, at any time through Christ our Lord.

Even the Roman soldier who took care of executions realized Jesus’ innocence.  This soldier must have had a hard heart to take care of the executions, yet he realized that he was in the presence of the Holy One and praised God.

The friends of Jesus who were present must have been in a state of confusion and grief, wondering what would happen next.
