1 Samuel 2:12-26

Reflect

How do you want to be remembered? I know this can be a bit of a morbid question but it’s one that should cause us a profound sense of attentiveness to our lives and the impact we are making. Every funeral I attend, I am reminded deeply of the impact that one person can have and, in turn, I think of the type of legacy that I am already leaving behind me. Today we read of a few individuals that are leaving very different legacies. First, we are introduced to Eli’s (the priest) wicked sons. They did not follow the commands of the Lord. They treated offerings with contempt, and they dealt in an evil way with people. We also meet Samuel who ministered to the Lord in the way he was instructed to, and had a real delight in the presence of the Lord. The legacy of Eli’s sons, as we read tomorrow, was their rejection as priests. The legacy of Samuel was, as we will read in a few weeks, the calling and anointing of King David. The actions and character of these men, in contrast, pave the way for how they are still remembered 3,000 (estimated) years later. How do you want to be remembered? The way that you treat others and act before the Lord will have an effect. You will leave a legacy. What kind of legacy do you want to leave?
