Devotional Guide for Saturday, June 23

1 Samuel 18

Reflect

Jealousy can so easily turn in to an ugly, dangerous thing. What often starts out as something good turns into something that becomes all consuming. The more we dwell on the person or thing that we are jealous of, and the more we try to do something about it, the bigger and more consuming it gets. It’s a quick, downward spiral.

What began as a good relationship between Saul and David quickly spiraled out of control. Saul’s insecurity, jealousy, and need to preserve his own image led him to take drastic actions. When David was valuable to Saul, Saul loved him, but as soon as he started to feel threatened, Saul turned on David. Vs 29 says that Saul saw David as an enemy for the rest of his days.

Jealousy often starts as something small, that can be easily brushed off. But if we don’t address it, it quickly grows. Take a minute today to take stock of areas in your life that you might be prone to jealousy. Ask God what He might want to say about that to you today?
