2 Samuel 1:17-27

Reflect

David’s grief over the loss of Saul and his sons is overwhelming.  Of those who perished, most significant is the death of his best friend Jonathan.  What is even more stinging is the knowledge that there are Philistines who would celebrate upon hearing of the death of Saul and his sons.

Grief is a powerful emotion that can surprise us in how it affects us.  It is not something that we ought to avoid, as it allows us the channels to express our feelings of heartache and loss.  As we have been created in the image of God, we recognize that God is no stranger to these deep emotions.  Isaiah 53 foreshadows Christ who would be familiar with these kinds of feelings.  One such instance where we see the heartache of Jesus is Matthew 23; Jesus longs to draw the people of Jerusalem to Himself but they won’t let Him.

While we don’t look forward to times of grief, we see they are ways God has given us to express the deep hurts we may experience in life.  We may find comfort to know that our Lord understands the depths of our grief because He has been there too.
