Devotional Guide for Saturday, August 18

2 Samuel 21:1-14

Reflect

This chapter gives us the end of the rejection of Saul as king, as nearly all his descendants (other than from the line of Jonathan) have now been killed. It’s the end of all the conflict between David and Saul. On the one hand, it would be easy for David to celebrate the end of this chapter in his life, as he has now seen the destruction of his enemy. But what does David’s last act towards Saul reveal about his character? David takes Saul and Jonathan’s bones and buries them as an act of deep respect and honour. Instead of rejoicing in the position that he now finds himself, he shows honour to the king before him that God had appointed for a season, and love to a close friend.

David continues to show a deep reverence for God and His power and control in his life, and doesn’t let his own emotions get in the way of this.
