Devotional Guide for Saturday, October 20

Acts 16:16-40

Reflect
I find the depth of compassion Paul and Silas had for the jailer fascinating. It’s hard to know what extent he was involved in what was happening to them, but when Paul and Silas were freed, they saw this man in distress, about to kill himself, and they shared the Gospel with him and gave him hope. They didn’t owe anything to him, and he was at least somewhat involved in their suffering, but they had compassion for him. I haven’t experienced anything to that extent, but it makes me think about how I treat the people I run into throughout my day, especially the people that for some reason or another may get on my nerves. Maybe it’s the cashier at the grocery store who is slower than I was hoping when I’m in a rush. Or the server at the restaurant who makes a mistake on my order. Or the construction crew blocking my commute to work. How might God be calling me to have compassion on these people? What if I took the time to acknowledge that they have their own story too, and maybe God is intersecting our paths for a reason?
