Devotional Guide for Friday, January 26

Matthew 7:24-29

Reflect

Have you ever tried to build IKEA furniture without instructions? Some projects are self-explanatory while others are like trying to learn a new language. There are many people online who have attempted to build IKEA furniture without instruction only to be left questioning the structural integrity of their project. Who knew that a dresser could be turned into a four-legged table?

There were two builders in this passage that shared one similarity and one difference. Both builders kept hearing the words of Jesus. They were exposed to His teachings, and now both builders are accountable to follow the teachings of Jesus.

One builder followed and obeyed the teachings, and the other did not. When calamity struck the builders, one man found stability, security, and blessing while the other was absolutely devastated. One carried out and practiced the words of Jesus, while the other did not.

Similar to building IKEA furniture, living as a disciple of Jesus requires us not only to listen (or read), but also to put the words of Jesus into practice instead of trying to go our own ways. It’s only on the wisdom of Jesus that provides a firm foundation in a shaky world that challenges our identity, purpose, fulfillment, and destiny.
