Devotional Guide for Saturday, January 27

Matthew 8:1-4

Reflect

Leprosy was a terrible disease in the ancient world. It progressed slowly and destructively and had huge social implications for the person with this disease. According to Jewish law and customs, people had to keep 6 feet away from a leper at all times. They had to leave their homes and families to live away from and outside of towns or cities in a place with other people in the same condition. They would have no contact, no touch, and be looked down on by all of society.

In our story today, one such man approaches Jesus. I can imagine he comes with great desperation in his time of need. He also comes with worship, and by uttering the words, “Lord, if you are willing, You can make me clean,” demonstrating his belief in the power of Jesus.

I LOVE what Jesus does. He could have spoken the words of healing and kept himself clean by Jewish law. But he doesn’t do this. He touches the man. This man who may not have been touched in years! Jesus heals with a touch and restores his body and heart.

What need or request do you have of Jesus? Take a moment to bring it to Jesus today knowing that He is a God who is compassionate. A God who reaches out. A God who is near.
