Matthew 26:1-16

Reflect

During this Holy Week we are offering some incredible events at church to prepare us for Resurrection Sunday. Today’s passage reveals that preparations are a way to reveal our values.
Bethany is a town just outside of Jerusalem. It was a town filled with the misfits, the poor, and the nobodies. For several years, Jesus taught His followers, of which many came from this status in life, that these are the people to show compassion toward.

In the home of an outcast (leper), an unnamed (scandalous?) woman (these are not people greatly valued) is in possession of a very valuable flask of ointment. She reveals that she has listened to Jesus when He has been telling them that He will be killed soon.

Her anointing reveals her value of lavish generosity to the One that had compassion upon her. In the bigger picture, it may not have been much but she gave Jesus what she had out of love, not duty. This offended the disciples, which calls into question who was really following Jesus.
It was the tipping point for Judas as he set off on another type of mission.

The true lover of Jesus courageously fulfilled her calling despite opposition from those that had been personally trained by Jesus. Jesus was touched.

We are confronted with this question: How does my life reveal that I believe Jesus is worthy of lavish praise?

What “flask” will you break?
