2 Timothy 2:1-10

Reflect

Throughout the decades of being a pastor, I have often heard how painful a relationship a person has had with their father. I myself deeply regret many occasions when I wounded my children.

Pay attention to this tender relationship that Paul the author has with Timothy, “my child” (v1). This aligns with many other verses where Paul sees his role as a father in the life of Timothy (1 Cor.4:17, Phil.2:22, 1Tim.1:2,18).

Paul recognized he had an opportunity and a responsibility to develop Timothy into the man that God called him to be. To make that a reality requires significant time and experiences with one other.

God brought them together and Paul provided Timothy with what was needed for his role in not only the church, but also in life. Paul’s belief in Timothy assisted Timothy to be successful. This relationship included countless experiences of doing life together, face to face, through the struggles and the delights. Timothy caught this and was able to influence others with a similar way of living.

Perhaps we could do likewise and develop relationships with the leaders of tomorrow (perhaps in your own family) in a manner that stabilizes them with the foundation in the Rock of Ages as they encounter the challenges of an ever-changing environment.

How is forgiveness and reconciliation needed in a relationship you are in?

Who will you come alongside of?
