Colossians 3:5-11

Reflect

Walter Wangerin Jr. (who spent some of his life here in Edmonton) wrote a short story called “The Ragman” which tells of a man who travels through his town freely giving away new clothes for old rags and taking on the affliction and the sin of those who take up the ragman’s call of “New rags for old! I’ll take your tired rags”.

Eventually the Ragman gives up his life from what he has become through the exchange of new for old.
Here in the third chapter of Colossians, we are challenged to do this very thing. Take off the old filthy rags, turn away from the old things that used to define our lives. Take on the new clothes that Jesus gives us, the new life that He offers us.

How often do we find ourselves tempted to return to the old rags of a sinful life? Paul uses some very strong language to suggest what we are to do with the old rags. Get rid of them, throw them away, put them to death. Will you let Jesus dress you in new clothes, clothes that He renews and restores?
