Jeremiah 39:1-18

Reflect
Zedekiah had been placed as a puppet king that pledged a loyalty to Babylon – a decision that haunted him. His legacy is horrific as he was the last King of the nation. He was a weak and indecisive leader that really lacked a spine to stand up to anyone. He thought he was keeping peace, but he was denying the reality of the demise of the people entrusted to him. When Jeremiah confronted him, he locked Jeremiah away in prison (ch.38). Truly, the consequences of his passive leadership caused the nation to be blinded, and passionless for the matters that concerned God the most. The severity of the torture that Zedekiah endured (vv6-7) gives an indication of how evil man can be. Jeremiah suffered hardships, as he remained true to godly character. He never bought into the lie that ‘the good life’ would amount to an easy life. Perhaps hard should not be equated with bad. How are you developing character? Your character shouts in the ears of those around you, whether you acknowledge that or not. Ask a person who will be honest to write down five words that truly describe your character. That might be the best gift they could give to you. What is your motivation for doing what you do?
