Devotional Guide for Wednesday, February 12

Matthew 11:1-19

Reflect
Last Wednesday’s devotional passage also included John’s disciples coming to Jesus with a question (Matt.9). Again, these men are the “all in” earnest type of Christians. They truly desire to mature and have Jesus as their ultimate treasure. It’s just that He does things eccentrically unique. They don’t have a box that He will fit into so they ask if He is the One. Since Jesus has gone public, we have Matthew’s account of the world’s best teaching (Ch. 5-7: “what you hear”), and then the miracles of the past few chapters (Ch. 8-9: “what you see”). Jesus has always done things His way; that continues today. Let’s contextualize verse 7. Why do you go to church? Would you still go if things didn’t go your way? What if things made you really uncomfortable? What if the message was so disquieting that at the end of the sermon, you realize that you hadn’t even started on your fancy coffee? What if you still remembered the sermon by Wednesday? What if Jesus actually meant what He said and our church experience radically altered our entire way of life so that we became fully aligned with what Jesus is doing today? What if fulfilling His calling on your life, had you sent to prison (v.2)? What if…? Blessed are you if you are not offended by Jesus (v.6).
