Psalm 62

Reflect
Can you recall a time when your soul was in disarray? Perhaps your expectations of life and reality were far apart. Maybe you experienced a great loss. Maybe that time is right now. Today’s psalm bursts with words describing the trust that the author has in God. My rock, my salvation, my fortress, my refuge. That one really sticks for me. My refuge. To say that God is his refuge places him in a tremendous minority of people throughout history. Very few people have clung, really clung to God as their refuge when their soul was screaming in pain. As you encounter this psalm, ask yourself “Where do I really place my trust?” The radical posture of trusting God rather than military might or wasteful consumerism goes against our culture’s dominant views and are seldom, if ever, even followed even by those of us that proclaim allegiance to El Shaddai. Yet, it is God Almighty who brings hope and refuge when our soul is troubled. “Trust in him at all times, O people: pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” Now is not the time to blame political leaders for thinking that our hope is in a new shiny approach, but we know it is not true.
