Psalm 65

Reflect
Sometimes in a season of difficulty it can be hard to find reasons to be thankful. I will be honest, there have been some days during the last few months when I have felt a little bit disappointed or nervous, even a bit weary. Today's psalm offers us a lot of reasons to be thankful: God answers our prayers, He forgives us, He blesses those who are near to Him, He is the hope of all the Earth, and He is the sustainer of creation. Let’s think about this a bit today. After instructing the people to sing and give praises to God, the Psalmist spends the final two thirds of the psalm describing the wonder of God as evidenced through creation.

  • Our God formed the mountains by His power. I don't know about you, but every time I journey to the mountains I am filled with awe and wonder.
  • He stills the raging seas and the turmoil of the nations. He is sovereign amid difficulty.
  • The sunrise and sunset are a wonder He has ordained. His creation reflects of His creativity and His beauty.

Apply
Each line is a deep invitation to thanksgiving and worship. I encourage you, if you are having a hard time finding reasons to be thankful (and if you are able), take a walk through the river valley slowly, without any distraction, and look for signs of God's creativity and beauty around you. Praise Him, honour Him, and let that start to bring thanksgiving back into your heart and life.
