Isaiah 33:1-23

Reflect

In this passage, we see a glimpse of some of the trials Israel faced as a result of a recent invasion they had experienced: economic challenges, ruined farmland and pastures (vs7-9). We also see a window into Isaiah's response to these difficult times. His response is striking, actually. In light of recent circumstances, the trust, strength, and worship illustrated in this passage moves me to reflect on the state of my heart.
Isaiah exalts the Lord, with a spirit of reverence and worship: "The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high; He will fill Zion with justice and righteousness" (v 5). He declares the Lord's trustworthiness and steadfastness: "He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge" (v 6). He also looks to the Lord for strength: "O Lord, be gracious to us, we long for You. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress." (v 2)

Apply

I can’t help but be prompted--even confronted--by Isaiah’s response to the recent challenges. Do I respond to the challenges in my life with worship? By exalting the Lord? Do I trust in Him, confide in Him, lean on Him for my strength? Or do I run to my own means? Join me today in repositioning our hearts towards the Lord in light of a challenge, question, fear or doubt we might be facing.
