Isaiah 36:1-37:1

Reflect

In 2004 Disney/Pixar came out with the animated movie “The Incredibles”. Right at the very end of the movie as the Parr family are walking happily through the city and we expect the credits are about to roll, out of the ground comes a giant drill and from the drill emerges what looks to be an angry mole. Grabbing a microphone, the mole introduces himself, "Behold, the Underminer! I'm always beneath you, but nothing is beneath me! I hereby declare war on peace and happiness! Soon, all will tremble before me!" Similarly, in our passage from Isaiah, the enemy of Judah, the commander of Sennacherib’s army makes loud boasts to the inhabitants of the city. In his declarations he attempts to undermine the people’s confidence in King Hezekiah and in the Lord.

Apply

We also come up against an enemy of which nothing is too low for him to undertake, in an effort to undermine our faith in our King, Jesus. He will try to get into our heads with all kinds of messages, spreading lies and trying to erode our footing on the Chief Cornerstone. Hezekiah’s (whose name means “The Lord Strengthens”) response to this was to humbly come before the Lord. Are you feeling undermined? Come before the Lord and seek His strengthening.
