Devotional Guide for Friday, February 19

John 12:20-28

Reflect

The gospel of Jesus Christ is an invitation to a life of wholehearted submission to Jesus. While He was walking the Earth, Jesus was not looking for people who were partially surrendered, He was looking for people to give Him everything. This is not an invitation to guilt, striving, or thinking that we have to “do” more to earn His love. Rather, this is an invitation to wholehearted dependence on and relationship with Jesus. This relationship is described in these verses as one of follower, servant, disciple. This wholehearted dependence is modeled by Jesus and described in these verses as well, as He outlines to the disciples the fact that He is about to do the ultimate act of service--laying down His life for others. This life of wholeheartedness may sound intimidating and difficult, but the reward is great! In this life, we will find true and eternal life, as well as receive the honour of God the Father! As you continue to reflect on Easter, consider Jesus' death as an act of service, and reflect on how you are being invited to express wholeheartedness to Him.

Apply

Today's Lenten fast is simple: we are to fast “collecting praise.” A true, altruistic servant does not serve to receive praise, they serve out of their desire for relationship and dependence on God. Any praise you receive should go right back to Jesus, but not out of false humility. Rather, out of a recognition of His work in and through you.
