Devotional Guide for Thursday, January 20

Luke 4:31-37

Reflect

There is a practice called Lectio Divina that has you read through a passage several times, and while slowly reading, you pay attention to what stands out to you.

Today while I was reading this passage, a couple of things stood out. The first was how the crowd was amazed at Jesus’ teaching, how His teaching had authority.

The second thing that jumped out at me was the response the demon had to Jesus. “Ha! What do you want with us Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us?” (v34)

Two very different responses to Jesus. One with awe and wonder, the other an attitude of skepticism and challenge.

Apply

As you reflect on today’s reading, I encourage you to ask yourself, “What reaction do I have towards Jesus?”

Pray for Daniela Pilz – Athletes in Action

Daniela is from Germany and serves with Athletes in Action (AIA) here in Edmonton at the University of Alberta and University of MacEwan. Her major role is preparing and leading Bible studies, Chapels and building relationships with the female athletes and their coaches. She has a heart for mentoring individual female athletes to help them become followers and disciples of Christ. The combination of faith and sport is very powerful and incredibly unique and Daniela desires to build the kingdom of God among these athletes so they ultimately become healthier athletes, maturing believers and light for the people around them and later on in their lives. Life doesn’t stop when we step off the field/court - it just begins.
