TAKE HEART

John 16

February 22, 2026

Speaker: Pastor Dave

Next week: Pastor Mike

But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

4 Gleanings from the Upper Room Discourse:

  1. People are trying to make sense of life.
  2. The great enemies of life are sin, evil, and death.
  3. Sin, evil, and death do not have the last word.
  4. We are not alone.

The Advocate will prove the world wrong…

… about sin

… about righteousness

… about judgement

Why is Jesus saying this to the disciples?

Why is Jesus saying this to us?

Discussion Questions

  1. When you hear the phrase “Listening in the Wilderness,” what comes to mind from your own life right now? Does this season feel forced upon you, chosen, or something else?
  2. Jesus says the Spirit convicts the world about sin—specifically unbelief.
How does defining sin primarily as unbelief (rather than just bad behavior) reshape the way you think about your own struggles?
  3. In Jesus’ day, righteousness was measured by rule-keeping. What are some modern “benchmarks” of righteousness or success that Christians can subtly adopt?
  4. Jesus’ way of righteousness looks like humility, service, and self-giving love.
Where is the Spirit inviting you to embody that kind of righteousness right now?
  5. The cross looked like Jesus’ defeat, but it was actually the defeat of evil. Where in your life does something currently look like loss — but you trust God may be working victory?
  6.
