Discussion Questions
-
Jesus notices the crowd and responds to their physical need before anything else. When have you experienced someone truly seeing and caring for your needs? How might you intentionally “see” and respond to the needs of others with the same compassionate attention?
-
The crowd was fed with far more than they needed, and leftovers remained. How does this story challenge the way you view God’s provision—especially when resources seem limited or needs feel overwhelming? How can you trust in God’s abundance in your own life today?
-
Just as the crowd was fed physically, Jesus points us to the deeper reality that He is the true Bread from heaven. In what ways do you notice a “spiritual hunger” in your own life, and how can you intentionally turn to Jesus to satisfy that hunger rather than seeking temporary substitutes?
-
The crowd wanted to crown Jesus as a political king, but He refused because their vision of Him was incomplete. How might we today misinterpret or simplify who Jesus is for our own convenience? How can we examine whether our enthusiasm for Jesus is for the real biblical Jesus or a version we’ve created?
-
Jesus multiplies the loaves and fish, yet slips away to the mountain, showing that His mission is greater than temporary satisfaction. In what areas of your life are you tempted to seek Jesus only for quick fixes? How might you learn to trust Him for the deeper, lasting nourishment of your soul?
-
John Ortberg reminds us that God is often present in ordinary moments. What “little loaves and fish” in your own life—daily meals, relationships, small acts of grace—have you noticed as evidence of God’s care? How can you cultivate a habit of seeing and responding to God’s presence in everyday life?
-
When have you tried to navigate life’s “storms” on your own, only to realize you needed His presence? How can you cultivate the habit of noticing Jesus even in the chaos?
-
Jesus’ presence transforms fear into peace, even though the waves and wind haven’t disappeared. How do you respond to fear in your life—by rowing harder in your own strength or by looking to Jesus? What practical steps can help you move from panic to trust when circumstances feel overwhelming?
-
Familiarity with Jesus does not automatically prevent fear or self-reliance. How can you intentionally lean into awe and dependence on Jesus in your daily life, recognizing that His presence—not your effort—determines peace?
-
Take a few moments to reflect silently: Where do you need Jesus’ compassion, provision, or presence most right now?
-
Offer a short prayer asking Him to help you notice His presence, trust His provision, and depend on Him in every circumstance.
