What does it mean for Jesus to be the Light of the universe and the Light of life?
- Let’s consider what it does not mean:
- Jesus is not just a light for some people, some cultures, and demographics
- Jesus is not just a light for some situations and circumstances
- Jesus is not just a light for a limited time
- How do we follow the Light of the kosmos & possess the Light of life?
- It is counter-cultural and will not be easy.
- Humanity prefers its own created, lesser lights (Rev 9:20)
- His light illuminates and reveals our own darkness. Nothing is hidden.
- Humanity loves darkness because the truth of their deeds is hidden (Jn 3:19).
- Jesus offers life that is marked by his Light, which gives increasing truth, knowledge, order, goodness, and justice.
- Humanity’s rejection of God leads to greater corruption and degeneration (Rom 1:28-32).
- It is counter-cultural and will not be easy.
- Three ways to follow the Light of the kosmos:
- In community; we are formed more into the likeness of Christ and we help form others by our participation.
- In service; we catch sight of Christ at work in a story beyond our own. We behold the Light in someone’s else experience of the Kosmos.
- In our own lives; we embrace spiritual practices that continually bring us into His Light.
Discussion Questions
- Is there an area where you might you hold a skewed understanding of Jesus, limiting him in some way?
- How does Jesus as the Light of the kosmos bring you hope? How are you practically living into that hope?
- How does Jesus as the Light of the kosmos cause you concern or even fear? Is there a place in your life where you don’t welcome his Light?
