Daniel 5

Reflect
Walls are fascinating. Throughout Scripture, and indeed throughout history we have wall after wall playing a crucial role in humanity. Of course, we have the Jericho wall being torn down, Nehemiah’s wall being built up. Walls keep people out (China Wall, Jerusalem Temple, and of course that one on the south America border) and walls try to keep people in (Berlin). Then of course, Jesus destroyed the wall between Jew and Gentile. Today we encounter the event that gave birth to the saying “the writing is on the wall.” The King’s demise is imminent, and he is oblivious to the reality of how repulsive his behaviour is. Caught in a celebration of debauchery, he epitomizes that what we celebrate is normalized regardless of how ungodly the actions. Daniel was the only one who could read from that wall but the writing is less cryptic in today’s culture. As you read “the writing on the wall” of today’s culture, what do you see? What is our culture celebrating that is misaligned with the Word of God? What walls do you need to break down in order to be the messenger that God will use as He advances His Kingdom?
