Devotional Guide for Friday, January 17

Matthew 6:1-4

Reflect
One of the words that I have been thinking about and reflecting on recently is “altruism”. Altruism is essentially treating others with kindness and respect while expecting nothing in return. We live in a culture where “love” has been associated more with how someone or something makes a person feel than truly giving of oneself for the sake of the other. Jesus modeled altruism and He taught it, today’s passage being one of those times. What I love about the passages we have been reading during these weeks is they are an invitation to examine our hearts. Yes, Jesus talks a lot about actions, but He does so to reveal the heart behind our actions. Today’s “action” is giving to those in need in a private way, not giving to make ourselves look good to others. I think we have managed to do this pretty well when it comes to finances, as rarely do I hear of people in our circles giving to make themselves look good. But I wonder if at times, at the heart of our giving, is either a desire to get something back or a desire to look good.

Apply
Like Jesus does so well in this sermon, I want to invite you to examine your heart. What are some of the motives behind your generosity? Ask Jesus where you are exhibiting altruism, and to help in the areas you are not.
