Devotional Guide for Saturday, March 21

Matthew 20:1-16

Reflect
“But that’s not fair!” If you’ve ever spent much time around kids, you’ve probably heard those words uttered before. There’s something in us that wants things to be fair, even from the youngest age. We probably get better at masking that feeling, but I don’t think it goes away as we get older. In some sense, maybe this is an aspect of our design, to pursue justice, and how we were made in God’s image. But when we view this parable through the “justice” lens, we miss the point. It’s not about what’s fair and what isn’t; it’s about God’s extravagant generosity. Yes, when we read the parable as it is written, it isn’t fair. Yet when I think about myself, if I truly got what I deserved, I wouldn’t be in a very good place. Praise God for His lavish grace and extraordinary generosity that has been extended to me, you, and everyone around us.

Instead of grumbling about what isn’t fair today, how can we appreciate and celebrate God’s generosity?
