Devotional Guide for Saturday, May 8

Mark 11:27-33

Reflect

“By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you authority to do this?” The religious leaders ask Jesus these questions in this passage. Earlier in this chapter, Jesus clears the temple courts and we read that the chief priests and scribes heard what happened and were looking for a way to kill Him. So, this question is not asked in earnest but as a way to trap Jesus. But Jesus is smarter, and He asks a question of them! It is a question they decide not to answer for fear that they would upset the people. And so, their attempt to trap Jesus fails and reveals the insincerity of their hearts. Jesus’ authority was challenged by the religious people of His day.

Apply

As followers of God, we submit to Christ’s authority. What does that look like? Take a minute to think about how God’s authority shows up in your life. Is there an area in your life God is asking you to surrender to Him? How is God asking you to be obedient to Him today?
