Devotional Guide for Monday, May 10

Mark 12:1-12

Reflect

In 2015 a 30-carat purple diamond called the “Kimberly Purple” was scheduled to go up for tender. What makes this diamond interesting, aside from its size, is that it was found in a mining plant tailings pile. Tailings are in essence the leftover waste from a mining operation. Purple diamonds apparently are very rare and can go for over $1 million a carat.  What an amazing discovery in the garbage pile!

Jesus’ story challenges the religious leaders to look beyond what they see as valuable to what they may have dismissed as unimportant or worthless. Jesus exposes the tenant’s folly in thinking that by killing the son they will be in line to inherit the vineyard. Where might we be acting in ways similar to that of the tenants? Where might we be failing to see the true value of what we have? Pray for God to give us eyes to see what is truly important.
