Yes, the plot to kill Jesus is a massive turning point in the story of Jesus, and in the story of humanity. So much so, that the proclamation in verse 45 could be overlooked. “…the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary…” With Mary! Mary didn’t join them; they came with her! Yes, the Mary that a few verses prior to this, while sobbing, passionately told Jesus that if He would have shown up, things would have been different. She witnessed what happens when a corpse listens to Jesus. This is the Mary of the infamous “Martha and Mary” that was radically shaking up the patriarchal culture by listening to the Living Word, rather than being in the kitchen where the women were expected to be. This same Mary is now leading a band of Jews into the stronghold guarded by the tyrannical spiritual authorities that are deaf to the new life God is revealing. Mary listened to Jesus; then she courageously became an activator of cultural change, for the love of Jesus.

Jesus spoke, “Unbind him, and let him go” (v44).
To what are you in bondage? Pause and listen to Jesus as He speaks words of freedom to you.
Now go. Listen as Jesus calls you into our culture to be an activator of love to the oppressed.
