Devotional Guide for Wednesday, May 3

Genesis 11:1-9

Reflect

Pastor David’s devotional passage on Saturday included God’s decree to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” (Gen.9:1,7). God says, “Go, bear fruit”.

We’ve already had three big “sin stories” in Genesis. Today we encounter the fourth.

What would motivate people to be disobedient to God’s obvious decree? The answer is found in verse 4, “…let us make a name for ourselves…”, which is really a mask of security and pride worn to hide their lack of trusting God to guide them to the new opportunities God called them to. God says, “Go, bear fruit”. The people ignore the calling in order to embrace comforts and attempt to squeeze God into their story, rather than seeing their role in His story.

God’s will for His creation is diversity, not sameness. What is true for birds, trees, plants, mammals, fish, etc. is also true for humans. God calls us to disperse and spread the good news of His love to the furthest regions. Our loving, Creator God does not smile upon His people settling for subtle arrogant unity at the expense of fulfilling His call to courageously “Go, bear fruit…”, and is not opposed to extreme measures to get His people on track. The highest elevation is love, not unity. History is replete with evil cultures that had unity but not love for those on the margins; those that are not in the inner circle.

“Go, bear fruit…”. Where do you discern that God is calling our church to fulfil that decree? What is your role in getting us there?
