John 11:25-26
Today we will be continuing our series “Dwelling in Jesus” and the sub-series, which has us transforming through the careful questions that Jesus asks. We are immensely grateful that Pastor Wayne Stapleton will delivering today’s sermon.
John 11 flows with a gripping story of the struggle of life, the ways of God, and the contentious responses to the Jesus Way.
Jesus had very unique and dear relationships with certain people. Included in His inner circle were Martha, Mary, and their brother Lazarus. These people had ministered to and with Jesus profoundly. Knowing Jesus deeply did not exclude them from the searing pain of deep suffering and struggle. The idea that walking closely with Jesus will shield us from lament just doesn’t align with reality, though sorrow can prove to be a better teaching environment than any other.
Jesus meets them in their pain. He has few words. Silences drip off the sides of His words. Often, we say too much around those that lament as we try to make things better. Jesus displays that they need His presence. People need us to be there.
Notice how Jesus meets the anger coming from Martha’s sore (not soul) with compassion and hope. Martha is gracefully led to a point where she must decide whether her perception will expand to believe beyond what she currently believes to be reality.
How is your journey through struggle an indication of what you believe?
